Lessons

Drum lessons are another way of sharing my passion for music and drumming.  My students are diverse - from young to old(er!), beginner to advanced, and they have goals ranging from ambitious to just-for-fun.  But in all cases, I try to help them learn the elements of great performances - those things I strive for in my sound - and hopefully help them build confidence and a deeper appreciation for music through drumming.

Half-hour weekly drum lessons are available at Music 6000 in Olympia at a rate of $20 per lesson, with one-hour lessons at $40.  I also offer as-needed coaching lessons to fit your schedule and “house-call” lessons at your home or studio.

Drum lessons are scheduled Monday through Thursday, during Music 6000’s regular open hours of 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.  Feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions, or if you would like to schedule your first drum lesson.

Teaching Approach

My overall approach to educating takes its cue from advice that Ndugu Chancler (Michael Jackson, Miles Davis) gave me a few years back, when I asked him what I should do to become a successful working musician.

I realized afterward that this advice mirrored the education program at the L.A. Music Academy, where we had classes on technique (hands) an
d reading skills (eyes), and where our workshops stepped us through the most common styles (rock/pop, jazz, funk, RnB/soul, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian).

But my students are all working adults or full-time students (non-music-major), so time is limited.  My practical approach focuses on teaching them the musical vocabulary for the style or two that they are most interested in, including enough basic reading skills that they can follow the handouts and other written materials, and working on basic technique elements - grip, balance, and motions - that will improve their sound and abilities, while helping prevent injuries.  From there, we explore other styles and more advanced techniques, of course, as time allows.

"Cal is a great teacher.  When I was at the LA Music Academy he helped me a lot with my sight reading, and transcribing.  He was great at explaining things that I was having trouble with, and I would not have been able to make it without him."

-Vincent (LA Music Academy Alumnus 2009)

"I was in danger of failing my 2nd quarter Harmony, Theory, and Ear Training at LAMA - the class was really fast paced for me.  I met with Cal once or twice a week and we went over everything that I was learning in class, except it was more at my pace.  Cal was very patient and practical. Even when he tutored us in group lessons, he was great and helped out all of us at once. As a result, my next test came back for Theory and it was a B+! His help enabled me to pass the class with no problem and I'm eternally thankful.”
