About Me
Cal brings to his current projects a versatility, a musical ear, and a weight of experience uniquely deep and diverse among Seattle-area drummers. His overlapping 25 years on drum set, 15 years in symphonic and orchestral ensembles, and 10 years in DCI-style competition marching bands combine to form his unique sound - a global menu of grooves flavored with classical instrumentation and musical awareness, and delivered with technical precision.
Participating in as many groups as he could from a young age, Cal amassed several hundred performances before he reached his twenties, playing for audiences ranging from intimate corporate and private gatherings to the tens of thousands at sporting events, and even included then-president Ron Reagan.

Cal credits hard work, good instructors, and a healthy dose of luck for the many unique opportunities and honors he has garnered over the years, including soloing with the N.C. Symphony, backing Bobby McFerrin in concert, opening for Live’s Throwing Copper tour at Raleigh’s Walnut Creek Amphitheater, and serving as Drum Captain an unprecedented three years at N.C. State University. Most recently, Cal was awarded the Joe Porcaro Drum Scholarship to complete an 18-month program of study at the Los Angeles Music Academy - an award of almost $13,000.
Drawing from over a decade in the professional engineering field, Cal operates at a level of professionalism also uncommon among many musicians today - recognizing the value of time, communicating effectively, and doing such radical things as showing up on time, prepared, sober, and ready to work. But even when working, Cal makes sure not to forget the most important things - a positive attitude and having fun!
Cal lives in Tacoma, Washington with his wife, teaching private music lessons and performing throughout the Puget Sound area.
“I consider myself one of those jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none guys. Honestly, mastering drums will take several lifetimes, but I’m driven to keep moving in that direction. Having several styles and a ton of performances to color my perspective on songs and the role of the drummer allows me to bring great value to songwriters and producers, I hope, and hopefully gives added value to my students as well.” - Cal

“I had the pleasure of teaching Cal while he was a student at the LA Music Academy. He was always in the studio working on his projects or helping other students with theirs. I happily recommend Cal for any live performance, studio or teaching opportunities that come his way!”
